Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old is an unpeated Islay single malt Scotch whisky: fruity, nutty and gently salty, with none of the smoke Islay is famous for. At £36.99 for a 70cl bottle at 46.3%, non-chill filtered and with natural colour, it’s one of the best-value Islay whiskies you can buy.
If you love Islay’s coastal character but not its peat, or you want a sherried dram that doesn’t cost the earth, this is the bottle to try. Here’s how it’s made, how it tastes, and how it compares with its smoky neighbours.
The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Fresh Coconut launched at £140 for a 70cl bottle in August 2026. It is the sixth and final release in the Harmony Collection, a 46.3% single malt made to taste of fresh coconut, lime and tropical fruit. That is an unusual profile for Macallan, a distillery best known for…
The Macallan Harmony Collection has reached its final chapter, and it ends on a tropical note. Launched in August 2026, the sixth and last edition comes as a pair: Macallan Harmony Inspired by Fresh Coconut and Macallan Harmony Inspired by Toasted Coconut. They share the same idea but taste quite different. And there’s a catch:…
Ardbeg’s Vintage_Y2K series is now complete. In September 2026 the Islay distillery released the Ardbeg Vintage Y2K 25 Year Old, the third and final bottle in a series that began in 2024. All three whiskies come from spirit distilled in 2000, the year Ardbeg came back to full production. Each one was finished in a…
The distillery sits near Port Askaig on the Sound of Islay, the most northerly distillery on the island. It was so remote that it could only be reached by boat until 1960.
Its pear-shaped stills are the tallest on Islay. Tall stills with long necks favour a lighter, cleaner spirit, which is part of why Bunnahabhain tastes so different from its neighbours.
Is Bunnahabhain peated?
No. Bunnahabhain 12 is unpeated, which makes it the odd one out on an island famous for smoky whisky.
The distillery does make some peated releases, such as Bunnahabhain Mòine and Toiteach a Dhà, but its house style, and the 12 Year Old, is smoke-free. What you get instead is Islay’s sea air: a light salty, coastal note that sits behind the fruit and nuts.
Bunnahabhain 12 tasting notes
The distillery’s official notes:
Nose: fresh and aromatic, fruity and floral, with hints of dried fruit.
Palate: light fruit notes and nutty flavours with a sweetness, plus slight hints of vanilla and caramel.
Finish: long and lingering, rich and full-bodied, with a hint of sea salt.
Independent reviewers find more depth. The Whiskey Wash picked up raisin, plum and roasted walnut, with clove, leather and a salty, seaweed-tinged coastal note, and scored it 8/10. They also noted that batches vary, with some showing more sherry than others.
With water: add a few drops and the dried fruit and caramel come forward, while the salty edge softens.
The quality is recognised too. Bunnahabhain 12 won Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2024 and 2025, and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2026.
How much is Bunnahabhain 12 in the UK?
Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old is £36.99 for 70cl at Scotch Whisky World (price checked October 2026).
For that you get a 12-year-old Islay single malt at 46.3%, non-chill filtered, with no added colour, and award-winning at that. Many 12-year-old single malts at a similar price are bottled at 40% and chill-filtered, so this is strong value.

Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength
Bunnahabhain 12 Cask Strength is the same 12-year-old whisky bottled straight from the cask, without being diluted. It’s a limited edition, and the strength changes with each release. The 2025 edition is 56.4% ABV.
It’s also more sherry-led than the standard bottling. The 2025 edition was matured mostly in second-fill Oloroso sherry casks, with some first-fill and refill casks, all in the distillery’s coastal warehouses.
Official tasting notes (2025 edition)
Nose: golden raisins and apricots, balanced with toasted nuts and a light floral note.
Palate: malty sweetness, soft oak and dried fruit, with sultanas, hazelnuts and gentle spice.
Finish: oak spice and light tobacco, with a gentle touch of sea salt and cocoa powder.

Bunnahabhain 12 vs Bunnahabhain 18
Bunnahabhain 18 Year Old is the step up in age. It’s also 46.3%, non-chill filtered and unpeated, but matured in Oloroso sherry casks, so it’s richer and darker.
Bunnahabhain 12: fresh fruit, nuts, vanilla and a salty finish. Lighter and brighter.
Bunnahabhain 18: dried fruit, honeyed nuts, toffee and spice, with rich oak and a dry, salty finish.
If you enjoy the nutty, sherried side of the 12, the 18 is where that style goes with six more years in the cask. For everyday drinking, the 12 offers far better value.
Is Bunnahabhain 12 worth it?
Yes, for most whisky drinkers.
Buy it if you like sherried, fruity whisky, you’re curious about Islay but don’t like peat, or you want a 46.3%, non-chill-filtered malt for under £40.
Neat, in a tulip-shaped glass, to pick up the fruit and the sea salt.
With a few drops of water, which brings out the dried fruit and caramel.
With food: try it with a mature cheddar, salted nuts or a square of dark chocolate.
