The short version: Laphroaig 10 is the classic and the best place to start. Quarter Cask costs a few pounds more and is richer and stronger. Above that, you’re paying for age, rarity or special casks.
How much is Laphroaig 10?
Laphroaig 10 Year Old usually costs £36 to £45 for 70cl in the UK, and it’s £39.99 at Scotch Whisky World. It’s the distillery’s flagship whisky and the bottle most people mean when they search for “Laphroaig”.
What you get for the money
10 years old, matured in ex-bourbon barrels
40% ABV, 70cl
Big peat smoke: the nose is strong peat smoke and seaweed with a sweet edge, the palate is intense medicinal peat and savoury salt with hints of vanilla and fruit, and the finish is long and distinctive
Is Laphroaig 10 good value?
Yes, if you like smoke. Laphroaig 10 is one of the boldest peated whiskies you can buy at this price, and it’s the benchmark many people use for every other smoky Scotch. Under £40 for a 10-year-old Islay single malt with that much character is hard to beat.
If you’re new to peat, it can be a lot. Start with a few drops of water, or try a gentler smoky malt first (see the alternatives below).
The rest of the Laphroaig range: what the extra money buys
Laphroaig Quarter Cask (around £43–£47)
The best-value step up. It’s matured in bourbon barrels, then finished in small quarter casks, which speeds up the oak’s influence. Bottled at 48%, it’s richer and sweeter than the 10, with smouldering peat, coconut and banana.
Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength (from around £50)
The classic 10, bottled undiluted at batch strength, usually well over 55%. Each batch is a little different. For fans who want Laphroaig 10 turned up to full volume.
Laphroaig Lore (around £65)
A blend of Laphroaig whiskies of different ages and cask types, bottled at 48%. Richer and more layered than the 10, and a popular gift for Laphroaig fans.
Laphroaig Four Oak (around £64 for 1 litre)
Matured in four different types of oak cask and sold mostly in airport duty free, in a 1-litre bottle. Softer than the 10.
Laphroaig Oak Select (around £28–£30)
The cheapest way into Laphroaig. Lighter and smoother than the 10, but with less of the classic medicinal punch.
Laphroaig 18 Year Old (around £175)
Back by popular demand. Aged 18 years in American bourbon casks and bottled at 48%, it’s smoother and fruitier, with leather, seaweed, orange, honey and ginger. A special-occasion bottle.
Smoky alternatives to Laphroaig 10
Love the idea of Laphroaig but want something gentler, or richer? These Islay bottles are all in stock at Scotch Whisky World:
Bowmore 12 Year Old, £34.99: honeyed, with medium smoke. The easiest step into peated Islay.
About £36 to £45 for 70cl in the UK. It’s £39.99 at Scotch Whisky World (October 2026).
How do you pronounce Laphroaig?
“La-FROYG”. The “ph” sounds like an “f”, and the “oai” rhymes with “boy”.
Which Laphroaig is best value?
Laphroaig 10 for the classic taste, or Quarter Cask if you want a richer, stronger whisky for a few pounds more.
Is Laphroaig 10 good for beginners?
Only if you already know you like smoke. It’s one of the most heavily peated whiskies around. If you’re new to smoky whisky, start with Bowmore 12.
Why are older Laphroaigs so much more expensive?
Every extra year in the cask costs the distillery storage and lost whisky to evaporation, and there are far fewer old casks to bottle. That’s why the 18 Year Old costs over four times as much as the 10.
Please drink responsibly. You must be 18 or over to buy alcohol. Prices checked 23 October 2026.
