Quick answer: In the UK, Macallan 12 Double Cask typically costs around £70 for a 70cl bottle, and Macallan 12 Sherry Oak costs around £80. Both are 40%. Macallan 12 is one of the best-known single malts in the world, and one of the most searched-for bottles in the UK this Christmas season. But there isn’t just one Macallan 12. The two main versions in the UK are Double Cask and Sherry Oak, and they taste noticeably different.
Below, we compare price, casks and flavour side by side, explain which one suits whom, and suggest some great sherry-cask alternatives if you’d like that Macallan style for less.

Macallan 12 Double Cask
Double Cask brings together two kinds of sherry-seasoned oak. The American oak adds vanilla, honey and a creamy sweetness. The European oak adds dried fruit and gentle spice. The result is smooth and approachable, with notes like butterscotch, honey, marmalade and warm pastry, and a soft, fruity finish.
It’s the cheaper of the two, and the easier one to like straight away.
Macallan 12 Sherry Oak
Sherry Oak is the traditional Macallan style, matured only in European oak casks seasoned with sherry in Jerez, Spain. That gives a deeper colour and a richer, fruitier character: think sultanas, orange peel, sweet spice and a firmer, oaky finish.
It costs around £10 more, and it’s the one long-time Macallan fans tend to reach for.
Which Macallan 12 should you buy?
- Buy Double Cask if you’re newer to whisky, you like smooth, honeyed flavours, or you want the better price.
- Buy Sherry Oak if you love rich, fruity, sherried whisky, or you’re buying for someone who already knows Macallan.
- Buying a gift? Sherry Oak feels more “classic Macallan”. Double Cask is the safer crowd-pleaser.
Is Macallan 12 worth the money?
You’re partly paying for the name. Macallan 12 is a well-made whisky, but other distilleries make similar sherried single malts for much less. If you love the Macallan style, it’s worth it. If you just want a rich, sherry-cask whisky, the alternatives below are worth a look.
